The top 5 non-game DS games. According to me!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Frankly it wouldn’t be accurate or complete for me to only write about ‘games’ on a DS research website. Why? Because now a days there are more than just games on it, that’s for sure. And having not posted in a while (Due to the death of my laptop I might add ;_;) I figured I may as well do another list to get me back on track.

This time, it’s non-game DS applications as I like to call them.

5) Cooking guide:

I’m sure most DSers have heard of this neat little recipe non-book. This made my list simply because it’s pretty cool to have a wealth of recipes on your DS. I mean from experience I can say that all the recipe books in my house no longer have indexes, so really you can’t find anything, but with a device like the DS coupled with the Cooking Guide, that’s not really a problem anymore. My only issue with it is…it doesn’t have a tremendous amount of stuff that I actually like to cook. Okay so that’s a personal reason but still it made the list. =3

4) Electroplankton?

The question mark is there on purpose, and that’s because I wasn’t really sure if this was a game or a non-game. If you read my first post on this blog you’ll notice that I actually included this title in my top 10 games list as well, but I think in a way it deserves a place here to, since there’s no real gameplay. What I love about electroplankton is that it’s…just nice. It’s like, you can make nice background music with it and sit and meditate to it. That’s why I like it.

3)My Japanese coach/Chinese coach

These are the only non-games from the My Coach series that I’ve actually tried, and I think they’re both pretty good. The fact that the DS can be used as a learning aide is just brilliant in my opinion. Okay so you can’t get a university degree in languages from it, but it’s still useful for learning a few decent phrases.

2) Brain training

Now this, when it first came out I was slightly addicted, I’d do all the exercises every day, made sure I cracked at least one sudoku puzzle a day. It was awesome, and it still is, the only issue I have with brain training, is that it does tend to get repetitive, and once I got that 20 year old brain, I kind of got bored. But still, it’s an great way to exercise your brain, another lovely non-game for the DS.

1) Korg DS-10

My personal favourite non-game has to be this, the application that essentially turns your DS into a music studio. I’ve posted about this a while ago when it first came out, and since then I’ve grown to love it. At first I had no idea what I was doing, but after fiddling around a bit, even I feel like a proffesional mixer. I’ve found myself remixing video game tacks even. (and not badly, may I say.) It’s absolutey awesome and so deserves the top spot on my non-game list.

So there it is, my top 5 favourite non games on the DS. Disagree? drop a comment. Agree? drop a comment. Dunno? Drop a comment anyway, I’d love to hear from you. X3

Oh geez Korg DS-10 makes me feel like a freakin’ DJ!

Korg DS-10

Korg DS-10

So I got my mitts on a copy of that game I told you about a few days back. And I loved it from the moment I started playing. You know when you watch TV and you see those DJs with their huge head phones in the clubs with their decks and their loud music and coloured lights and junk? Well that’s what I felt like! I was throwing my hands up in the air and everything, it was awesome. XD

But do I know what I’m doing? Hell no! there are so many buttons and dials to turn, I just gave up trying to find out what they all meant, I pretty much winged it, (as you do) and found myself with something not bad, something that I might actually not complain if I had to dance to. (Well maybe after a while I would, since it loops every 2 seconds, but that’s not the point.)

Basically, I must say that I’m pretty impressed by Korg DS-10, I don’t know much about the proffesional side of music production, but I can imagine that this is as close as I’ll get to it heheh. And who knows, if I’m lucky maybe I’ll even find out what everything does.

Rhythm Tengoku Gold

Rhythm Tengoku Gold

If you’ve never played Rhythm Tengoku on the GBA or it’s younger brother Rhythm Tengoku gold on the DS, this news probably wont mean much to you, but for those of you who have played it and loved the music, (As I did) you’ll be quite happy to know that the official soundtrack is to be released on the 15th of October.

The soundtrack apparently contains over 115 tracks spread over 3 CDs, which I think is a pretty good package. CDJapan.com is telling me it’ll cost $48.72 or £27.58.

Now if you haven’t played it, it’s a game I’d definitely recommend it, it’s a rhythm game in it’s own class. Currently it’s only available in Japan, and I doubt it’ll be release anywhere else, but if you’re interested and able I’d get your hands on it ASAP.
